Week Three: Artist Reference: Jimmy Fallon

Jimmy Fallon is a very popular American comedian and television host. Many of the skits that he performs when interviewing celebrities on "The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon" have similarities to other well known household games. The themes of some of these skits relate really well to the ideas that we have been brainstorming for our market p(a)lace offering. The tone of the skits that Jimmy Fallon does is very humorous, which is what helps him to have such a large fan base worldwide. If something is funny the viewers are more likely to stay and watch or be a part of the proceedings, as opposed to things without humour where the viewer will get bored faster and move on to the next exciting thing. Perhaps we could take inspiration from Jimmy Fallon and try to make our offering something funny so that the customers really engage with our offering and want to stay and experience it. Below are some specific examples of Jimmy Fallon's skits that relate to our ideas for a market p(a)lace offering.

"True Confessions" (Relates to our 'wall of confessions' idea)
The contestants each get two envelopes with a confession inside of each. One confession is true and the other is a lie. Contestant 1 opens one of the envelopes and reads out the confession. The other two get one minute to question contestant 1 about their confession, before guessing whether the confession was true or false. The game repeats for the other two contestants.

This would be a really good way to incorporate confessions and humour into a market offering, as some of the confessions that are said are absolutely hilarious, and even more funny if you discover that they are true! The idea would need a lot of development though as it is very time consuming, and requires a participants full attention for the whole time, which may not be feasible in the hustle and bustle of the market p(a)lace where there would be a lot going on. It would also require the participants to write amusing confessions, otherwise it would not be very funny. This would be an excellent way to get people interacting with each other as you could put the participants into pairs or groups that did not know each other, and if they didn't previously know each other it would be harder for them to guess whether the other was telling a truth o a lie. The atmosphere and set of the video is a parody of old detective shows which makes it even funnier to see Jimmy Fallon and two celebrities doing the interviewing. We need to consider how we want the atmosphere of our offering to get the best effect for the style/ feel we are trying to create.

"Faceketball" (Relates to Tapiwa's Baller's Box idea/ the idea of incorporating a competition into our offering)
Players sit down in chairs and take turns throwing balls at each others hoops. First to three wins.

This skit turns the typical 'basketball shootout' into something hilarious simply by changing the hoop from the conventional style into something that is worn on the head of each player. It also makes the game more difficult, which is better because it evens out the skills of the players e.g. someone who is good at traditional basketball v.s. someone who is less experienced. It is something that multiple people can do at a time and also would be a quick game that would fit well into a market place setting where people will want to move on from each offering quickly and there won't be lots and lots of space for the offerings to be run in. The headgear would have to be made and there would have to be lots of prototyping done to get it right, which could get expensive. Perhaps there could be a leader board or a prize could be given to the person who gets three shots in the quickest/ with the least number of misses.

"Pool Bowling" (Relates to the life sized game idea)
Players bowl with the white ball until one player has sunk both of their balls.

This is a really good example of making a well known game that most people would know the rules to life sized. The instructions are really short which would save time, and mean that the customer stayed interested. You could have more balls than in the example so that lots of people could play. Either it could be a competition with prizes and a leader board, or you could just have the set up running all day and let groups of friends come and have a go as they liked. The set up may be harder than some of the other ideas to fit into a suitcase, but with some well planned designs it would definitely be possible. The game also does not require a massive amount of space, although some space would definitely be needed. The fact that it is such a recognisable game would probably draw in customers, and the temptation of a competition against your friends.

"Giant Beer Pong"(Relates to the life sized game idea)
Players have to bounce the volleyballs into the giant red cups. when one player achieves a shot, the other player has to drink a cup of beer. The first player to 3 shots in wins.

Just like the giant pool game, this would be an interesting offering to have at a market p(a)lace because it is a recognisable game that most students will have played, however with a totally different set of movements involved. The props for this game would be a struggle to fit into a suitcase, however the cups could stack, and the balls could go inside the cups, which minimises the space. One potential issue is that there will most likely be a lot of other stalls around, and the out of control volleyballs could damage other teams offerings. We would also have to think of some other alternative to drinking, perhaps if player 1 got a ball in, player 2 will have to put a confession up on the wall of confessions?! This game could also incorporate prizes and a leader-board which would generate interest in the potential customers. Another issue is that only two people can play at once and then people might have to wait and potentially get bored and leave before they got a go. This idea is definitely eye-catching, however would need a lot of development to make it run well in a market setting.
